Mark Powell thought it was tough leaving football behind after his high school days, electing to enroll at the University of Tulsa. He learned a tougher lesson when, as a college freshman, his father was killed in a car accident.

Powell had worked a bit for Dr. James Arnold during high school, but he was now deciding his career path.

“I just wanted to see what (the medical field) was like,” Powell said.

He graduated from Tulsa in Health Sciences in 1987, then enrolled at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Medical School, where he graduated in 1991.

Today, Powell is the owner and orthopedic surgeon for Northwest Orthopedic Center in Springdale.

“The most exciting thing for me is just watching people get better,” said Powell, 35, who specializes in shoulders and knees.

As part of his fellowship experiences, he has helped with coverage of numerous athletic teams and events, including the NFL’s St. Louis Rams.

Born in Nurnberg, Germany, Powell moved to Arkansas at the age of two.

Powell’s outside interests include fly fishing, where he holds an International Game & Fish Fly Line world record with an 8 1/2-pound White Rock Bass (Hybrid Striper) he landed in 1997.
